A Song of the Road: a ballad

In the heart of matter I was

E’en before the worlds began:

How can I not know

Adam’s fall from grace?

Refrain:

I travel light and every mile

My bags swell

With a light hollow feel:

I have been here before!

Do I lightfoot forward

Or  redemption to follow?

On Impulses found

Or drunk to the numb with sorrow?

Refrain:

I travel light and every mile

My bags swell

With a light hollow feel

I have been here before!.

I was there ‘n the tree of life

And the forbidden fruit

(Free from blame and sorrow)

I am the king of the road.

Refrain:

I travel light and every mile

My bags swell

With a light hollow feel

I have been here before!

I’m the bard’s tongue and the point

Of an assassin’s knife.

I am the wound and the healing;

For a king must wing it!

Refrain:

I travel light and every mile

My bags swell

With a light hollow feel

I have been here before!

I am the isle and the sea of change.;

So much so I am at home,

In sodden ditch or in a camp

By the dying fire amidst ashes.

Refrain:

I travel light and every mile

My bags swell

With a light hollow feel

Let not hold me back.
